I Love Lamp... Sockets

Grand Brass sells the best lamp sockets I’ve ever worked with. So much better than the cheap brass crap you can get at the hardware store, the sockets actually screw together.

The best one has a built in dimmer switch (near the bottom of the page). They are expensive, but so worth the price.

Drying the Lamps

I was in the Poconos a couple of weeks ago and turned two lamp blanks: one birch (the tall one), one maple (the fat one). Both turned green and allowed to crack. Need to dry them out completely (nuke them) before I can add the finish.

Oak Lamp   Oak Lamp base after tung oil

Finished up a new lamp. An oak tree fell naturally at parent’s place in the Poconos. I took one of the logs and turned a small base.

I finished it with stain and tung oil. It was my first time using tung oil, I really liked the results. Lamp hardware is from Grand Brass.

Say no to Crack

Oak cracks, no two ways about it.

I knew the base would crack, hoped it wouldn’t, and now I’m telling myself that the cracks add character.

This lamp base has a shape similar to Jess’s Lamp. I’m thinking I’ll pair it with the stained glass lamp shade I’m still working on.

The Great Glass Lamp Shade part 2

Take 2 on the glass lamp shade.

This time I tried smaller sections of glass. That means a lot more cutting and a lot more soldering, but I really like the look. It reminds me of subway tiles. Anyway, it sure beats the gunk shade.

I ran out of glass, so I fear this shade will be in a holding pattern for awhile.

The Great Glass Lamp Shade part 1

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

I make a lot of lamps, but I always have a hard time picking out the right shade. Usually, the only shades you buy are crap. So I decided to learn how to make my own. I got my hands on some how to DVD’s on stained glass making. Glass cutting aint easy folks, so I decided to go simple: clear glass rectangles in a cylinder shape.

First lamp shade attempt

The glass cutting went ok, but the soldering was a mess. I used plumber’s flux, which is some messy stuff. It also left a lot of gunk on the glass. Not the look I was going for, for my first lamp shade. Back to the drawing board.

I also probably shouldn’t solder next to my pots and pans.
