You can build that, right?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

I’ve a small issue. It’s similar to how people who have a job in computers (anything remotely involving a keyboard and a mouse) are often asked to fix computer problems by people who have no idea about computers.

Me: I have no idea.

Them: Don’t you work with computers?

People have the same reaction when I can’t build something.

Me: I can’t make a bed.

Them: Don’t you make stuff?

Any other designers/makers out there have this issue?

Am I the only one excited for this?

Cracked iPhones may be the greatest kid’s toy

Cracked iPhone

Now I don’t have kids or an iPhone with a cracked screen, but I have to believe that it makes the perfect kid’s toy.

- The parent doesn’t have to worry about their child breaking it (breaking it any further that is)
- It can become a new toy with ever new app downloaded
- It’s meant for grownups, kids love that

Bodanna Pottery Studio

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

I took a pottery class at Bodanna Studios a while back. Bodanna is a nonprofit that teaches inner city kids craft, creativity, and responsibility through pottery. My teacher, Jeff Nimeh, was fantastic. He taught me some good stuff.

After 10 years of operation, Bodanna is closing. This is too bad, but they are having a big sale of hand made pottery. If that’s your thing, check it out.

American Design Club: Purpose and Worth Show

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I was at the AmDC’s Purpose and Worth show last night at DSW Flatiron. The show had some great pieces in it. The highlights for me were seeing one of Lindsey Adelman’s chandeliers in person (they are incredible), Leon Ransmeier’s glass coin bank (I want one), and Karl Zahn’s Pallet Mirror (what a great use of material).

The pieces are still at DWR today, I recommend checking it out if you get the chance.

Umbrella Breakdown

Umbrella Breakdown

Had some major rain in the city this week and went through a lot of cheap umbrellas. You can actually scavenge a lot of useful parts from these things.

- 4 different types of springs
- telescoping tubes
- black nylon (it can be used in some interesting ways)
- 1 metal ring
- a very bizarre 8 legged armature (oh the possibilities)

Cool Logo

MAD180N

I really liked this logo I saw on Madison and 34th Street. I like how the designer worked the address into Madison, kind of Se7en.

It’s been a pretty good week

I Got Class

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I take classes from time to time. Usually things I don’t have enough room in my apartment for: pottery, sculpture, wood turning. But it’s almost always something that I can already sort of do. Something I know I’m already going to be at least competent at.

Well I’m taking a water color painting class at the Y right now, and it is kicking my butt. I can’t believe I thought this would be easy.

We’re painting nudes tonight, I’m still struggling with bowls of fruit.
