Making Needle Nose Pliers

Needed needle nose pliers, so I made some

I snapped a drill bit while drilling the cord hole on the last Big Crack Lamp. Half of the bit was really stuck in the wood and I needed needle nose pliers to get it out. I couldn’t find any at the time, but I found many pairs of old rusted “regular” pliers. So a little effort on the grinding wheel and I had the right tool for the job.

Plugging a hole in a log Plugging a hole in a log Plugging a hole in a log

I’ve been turning some big logs lately. Unfortunately, one of them was pretty rotten in the center of one end. I drilled it out, turned a plug out of ash, glued it, pounded it in, and then cut it off.

It should hold, right?

It turns out reclaimed floorboards are kind of perfect for milling. They are flat, made of high quality hard wood, and are free. Just remember to remove all of the nails.

Lego Experiment: Studs on both sides, Double Lego

Lego experiment: studs on both sides. Double Lego

This may not be Kosher with the Lego purists out there, but I milled up a Lego brick with studs on both surfaces. Basically, it has two male ends instead of the traditional one male, one female.

Side note, I used old floorboards as the stock material (maple I think). This may be the perfect material for small desktop CNCs. Flat, milled hard wood that is essentially free. Just watch out for nails.

Wooden Lego Experiment

Milled a quick wooden Lego experiment. I can’t believe it fit the first try. Heavily influenced by Notcot.

More to come.

Reclaimed oak flooring from a semi

Recently got my hands on some reclaimed flooring from the trailer of a semi. It’s all beat-up and oily, can’t wait to turn it into a coffee table.

Shapeoko Controls

Slowly been putting a Shapeoko 2 together. One of my issues was what kind of enclosure to house all of the electronics and controls. I settled on using an electrical junction box. And yes, my CNC goes to 11.
