I took a show making class the other day and I’m kind of fascinated by the process. I learned how to properly measure my foot and where I apply pressure (apparently I don’t use my pinky toes). And technically I could make custom shoe forms - called lasts - for my feet. I bet I could CNC one of those bad boys.

Been experimenting with some off-the-shelf metal gears. Created a couple of gear boxes using laser cut acrylic panels and some standoffs. Pretty solid to show off simple mechanisms.

I snapped a drill bit while drilling the cord hole on the last Big Crack Lamp. Half of the bit was really stuck in the wood and I needed needle nose pliers to get it out. I couldn’t find any at the time, but I found many pairs of old rusted “regular” pliers. So a little effort on the grinding wheel and I had the right tool for the job.

I plugged a rotted end of a large log a few weeks back, and recently turned it. Turns out there was a lot of rot in this one. Made for some “exciting” moments on the lathe.

This is the last of the Big Crack series, primarily because I used up all of the wood I had from this tree.

Been working on a new version of the Vacuum Lamp. Surprisingly, a friend found the exact model of Electrolux the original was made from. I’ve made some slight modifications for the better, but pretty much the exact design. Only this time the wooden parts are made out of walnut instead of stained oak.

Turned one more big guy this week. I’m amazed how different the two lamps look even though they are roughly the same shape and from the same tree (pictures don’t quite show how different they look).

I’ve been turning some big logs lately. Unfortunately, one of them was pretty rotten in the center of one end. I drilled it out, turned a plug out of ash, glued it, pounded it in, and then cut it off.
It should hold, right?

I was helping my parents build a coffee table this week. My mom has been holding on to these old rough sawn pine boards for over a decade. We cut them to length and screwed them down to an existing coffee table. After some sanding, it looked great.

Can’t beat the sanding station’s view.
