Iceberg End Table

Untitled

The home improvements continue. I recently finished an end table, CNC’d plywood with a nice hardwood top. You’ll only see the front and top, but there is a lot going on that you can’t see. Hence the Iceberg.

Old Pine Board Coffee Table

Mocking up old pine coffee table

I was helping my parents build a coffee table this week. My mom has been holding on to these old rough sawn pine boards for over a decade. We cut them to length and screwed them down to an existing coffee table. After some sanding, it looked great.

AFH Table
Image taken by Naho Kubota

A couple of weeks back I worked on a table with C-Lab, Design Compendium, One Pot, Limn Architects, Highlands Dinner Club, and Architecture For Humanity. It was for the Design Like You Give a Damn Live celebration at the Armory on Park Ave in NYC. The goal was to get all of these great thinkers and incredibly capable people to sit down to a meal together, see what could be accomplished in such a short time (the meal and the table), become inspired, and basically change the world for the better. Simple, right?

The project was on a very tight deadline, the table was built in two days. The first day (the one I had a part in) was gathering materials, cutting all of the pieces, redesigning on the fly, and starting to put the thing together. We did all of this at the studio. The second day (I wasn’t there for that) was a lot of finishing work and putting it all together at the Armory.

From the final images I can tell that it came together great (side note: the Armory is awesome). I got to work with some very talented and, more importantly, really great people. I’m very proud to have a small part in this project.

Chair

This beauty takes me back to my Sunday school days. A school on 22nd and Lex was tossing out a lot of great stuff, I saw a guy walk off with a globe. I had my choice between this chair and an overhead projector. I stand by my decision.

Turned Oak Stool

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

After a little inspiration from Alma Allen, I turned my first stool (I guess it could work as a low end table as well). One of the bigger pieces I’ve ever turned.

Made from an oak tree that fell in the Poconos. I finished it with stain and tung oil.

Table Fights

About an hour before the model citizens reception started, Table Fights took place out front (in view of the Javits Center no less). Basically, it’s robot wars only the robots are tables. There’s a ring, an announcer, and table carnage. It’s fantastic.

They are going to be having another event in the Boston area June 19th. If you can, you should check it out.

Hardware That I Want to Build Furniture Around

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Through the years I have purchased/found/been given hardware that I instantly fall in love with. I want to build pieces of furniture around them, yet I never do.

Some day.

New Desk

Monday, July 13th, 2009

I’ve recently built a pull-out desk drawer in my bookcase. When the laptops are closed, the drawer tucks away. Every inch counts in a New York apartment.
