Turned Beer Taps

Beer Taps

I turned some beer taps for my brother-in-law. One of walnut for dark beer, one of oak for a lighter, and one in colorply (remember this wonderful stuff) for a seasonal brew.

I used these great tap hardware sets from Rockler.

Donation Boxes

A simple CNC’d plywood hinged box. Donation boxes for the Red Burns Scholarship Fund actually. I wanted to make them with what we have access to on the floor, so CNC and laser were my prime candidates. Also, I probably needed to make a couple of them, so it made sense for duplication down the road.

Aluminum Space Helmet?

Retaining Ring and Set Screws

This part started out as a quick demo on how to drill into a pipe (found on the ITP Fab site), but has morphed into something more. I’m thinking robot head (of course) or some sort of space/diving helmet.

Retaining Ring and Set Screws

I started with an off-cut piece of aluminum speed rail tubing (this stuff is everywhere around ITP), drilled a 1.5″ diam hole with a hole saw and jig, turned it on a metal lathe, and then made a retaining ring. I’m particularly proud of the ring: 4 evenly spaced holes, tapped for 6-32 threads, and secured by set screws.

Before and After

These parts has no purpose other than getting my chops back and the pure joy of milling parts.

Knight Rider Eyes Installed

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

Finally got the Knight Rider eyes installed in a robot. My 10 year old self is high fiving me right now.

Knight Rider Boards

I like how the second round boards came out. A custom PCB would be great, but these will do for now.

Robot in Pieces

Fully assembled with new eyes

I know it’s more of a Cylon than KITT, but that effect will always be Knight Rider to me.

Knight Rider circuit

I can’t believe it has taken me this long to build a Knight Rider circuit. Eventually there will be custom boards and they will be installed in robot heads.

I based this circuit off of this one and this one. Thanks people who posted those.

The Slinky Machine

Maiden Voyage

Because a Slinky wasn’t fun enough. Still in the prototype stage, needs the timing to be adjusted, but the Slinky Machine was a very fun build. I love ridiculous machines.

Getting there

Almost ready for a trial run. It’s moving at least.

More Mechanisms

Really happy with how these things turned out. Kind of a piston like device that allows a shaft to travel smoothly. Some copper pipe, bushings, shaft, and some shaft collars. More to come.

It’s a pretty good day when you get to talk about a place you love on a site you love. Thanks Norm and Sean, I had a blast.
