New Desk

July 13th, 2009

I’ve recently built a pull-out desk drawer in my bookcase. When the laptops are closed, the drawer tucks away. Every inch counts in a New York apartment.

Get Yourself a GIANT Lathe

July 10th, 2009

Look what I bought with my Cash Cab winnings.

My new baby

This thing is a beast. One and a half horse power, 16 inch turning diameter, 400 lbs. of lathe awesome-ness. Getting it to the shop was basically a sitcom. But it’s here now and I can’t wait to make beautiful stuff.

I thought this was very clever. Designed by the Matthias Ries Design Office.

Two Amazing Artists

June 25th, 2009

Two artists that I’ve been digging lately.

Arthur Ganson makes moving sculptures. His pieces have to be watched in order to be appreciated. Check out his gear making tools and his TED Talk.

Michael Salter is also a sculptor, but his medium is generally recycled styrofoam. A lot of giant styrofoam robot goodness on his site. Via NOTCOT.

Gowanus Studio Space Jell-O Mold Compettion

June 22nd, 2009

I went to the Gowanus Studio Space Jell-O Mold Compettion this weekend.

Saw some great stuff and the GSS is a pretty cool space. Go to Eat Me Daily for way better pictures and descriptions.

Moleskin 2.0 Exhibition Entry

June 16th, 2009

I entered the Moleskin 2.0 Exhibition contest. My idea is to use the fore-edge of the notebook. When you fold the notebook length-wise (when the spine practically touches the long edge of the back cover), the fore-edge of the pages fan out. Only when the notebook is folded this way, does a subway map clearly appear. This is due to the fact that the map is printed on the edge while the notebook is positioned like this. You can hide the fact that you are consulting a subway map and be spared the embarrassment and scorn from locals. It’s easier to show you than to explain it.

I was inspired by Martin Frost, a fore-edge painter. I saw his stuff (really amazing stuff) originally on Laughing Squid. Check it out.

I invented a new drink

June 4th, 2009

the Bear CreekAt least I’ve never heard of anything like this before. It is a refreshing spiked iced tea drink for the summer. It’s called the Bear Creek, that’s where it was invented.

- 3 parts iced tea (it can be flavored, something similar to Turkey Hill Iced Tea)
- 2 parts seltzer water
- 1 part vodka
- lemon wedge

serve over ice

I’ve been drinking them lately, and it really hits the spot. Anyway, it’s a whole lot better than the last drink I invented: wine-quilla. Trust me, it’s as bad as it sounds.

And I know what you’re asking yourself, “Are those Lego ice cubes?” Answer, yes, yes they are.

Bodanna Pottery Studio

June 2nd, 2009

I took a pottery class at Bodanna Studios a while back. Bodanna is a nonprofit that teaches inner city kids craft, creativity, and responsibility through pottery. My teacher, Jeff Nimeh, was fantastic. He taught me some good stuff.

After 10 years of operation, Bodanna is closing. This is too bad, but they are having a big sale of hand made pottery. If that’s your thing, check it out.
