B.Light Design

Once again my good friend Dave “Big Dog” Gould and I entered the Jell-O Mold Contest at the Gowanus Studio Space, we went with a Pacman theme.

Dog and I went with a gimmick this year, glow in the dark Jell-O. Well, glow in the dark under a black light anyway. If you use tonic water instead of regular water in gelatin, it will glow under a black light. The effect is pretty cool, but there are two major draw backs: it is hard to see the effect in the daylight and the Jell-O tastes very tonic-y.

To get around these issues we built a small arcade style diorama, to shade the natural light and house the black light, and we embraced the tonic flavor by adding gin, vodka, and other fruit juices (Jell-O shots anyone). Sadly, the heat was an issue for us for a second year in a row. Our power pellets were puddles in a matter of minutes.

Lucky for the spectators there were many other creative entries. My personal favorite was the “The Resistor Jeltone”, an edible, working, gelatin-based toy piano by team NYC Resistor: Ranjit Bhatnagar, Astrida Valijorsky, Mimi Hui, and Catarina Mota.

This event has grown so much in just three years. There were over 30 entrants, hundreds of spectators, press, and even CBS Sunday Morning was there filming. Fantastic job Michelle and Nadia.

I love a good design challenge. The folks over at Hendzel and Hunt gathered some great designers and asked them to create a machine capable of playing an Edison Bells record in one day. If that wasn’t enough, each group had a budget of only £30 to source materials from the surrounding area, and was not allowed to step anywhere near digital technology.

I love this kind of stuff. There should be a TV show like this, something similar to Iron Chef or Top Design, only with builders/designers/makers instead of chefs and interior designers.

I’m lucky enough that Lake Log Lamps made it into Apartment Therapy’s Design Showcase. AT can explain it better than I can:

We launched Design Showcase, with the intention of giving a bunch of independent designers a really good soapbox from which to pitch their work. For the lucky finalists, we also wanted to give them even more exposure and see if we could help to boost their careers to a whole new level.

This is really an incredible (and generous) opportunity for independent designers. They are going to be posting 30 different designs from August 30 - September 17.

Why not vote for Lake Log Lamps while you’re checking out all of the other great designs. You’ll need to register with the site to vote, so if you’re uncomfortable with that, I understand.

Well, sort of. Dave and I took home the coveted “Special Jury’s Meat Lover’s Honorable Mention” at the Jell-O Mold Competition. Dave get’s most of the credit for his beef consommé with horseradish and pork consommé infused with ginger, lemongrass, garlic, and star anise gelatins.

The event was a ton of fun, but it was hot. We put our Jell-O sculptures up on the wall and they did pretty well for the first 30 to 40 minutes. Long enough to get them photographed and for a couple of judges to get a look. But the heat turned out to be too much. After an hour or two of lying flat, they finally gave out and melted into a bovine/swine puddle. Yum.

We met some great people and saw some amazing pieces by the other competitors. I can’t wait for next year.

Dog and I are going with two savory gelatins: Beef Consomme with horseradish and Pork Consomme infused with ginger, lemongrass, garlic, star anise (Both Dog’s idea). They will be in the shape of a bull head and a boar head. The plan is for them to hang from a diorama-like wall, similar to mounted hunting trophies. Pics of our mock-ups below.

It’s kind of sad when your notebook is better traveled than you are.

I went to the Gowanus Studio Space Jell-O Mold Compettion this weekend.

The Gowanus Studio Space’s Jell-O Mold Competition will pit designers against each other in an effort to make the Jell-O mold cool again. Competitors will battle it out for mold supremacy in the following categories: Creativity, Aesthetics, Structural/sculptural ingenuity, Edibility/culinary appeal, Best use and showcase of Jell-O.

Saw some great stuff and the GSS is a pretty cool space. Go to Eat Me Daily for way better pictures and descriptions.
