DIY Christmas
Sunday, January 4th, 2009My family has the Christmas tradition of making our presents. This year I made turned candle sticks for one of my sisters. I was inspired by some candle sticks I had seen in a design blog somewhere.
An oak side table (or stool, can’t decide) for another sister. Kind of an homage to the Eames Walnut Stools
And a patterned t-shirt using discharge paste (maybe the worst named product ever). Remember the S.E.A. Monkey?
Chalkboard Paint Eyes
Friday, January 2nd, 2009Tried something different with the magnetic eyes, I used chalkboard paint. It adds a new slant on the faces I can make.
Get Yourself a Laser Cutter
Monday, November 24th, 2008I took a laser cutting class at NYC Resistor this weekend, taught by Bre Pettis. I designed some tree ornaments.
The laser cutter is such a cool tool. To be able to design something and have the final piece in your hands 10 minutes later, it’s like living in the future.
All of the designs from the class are posted at thingivers.com. So if you have access to a laser cutter, you can make your own trees.

DIY Pot Rack
Tuesday, November 11th, 2008Since I’ve seen some really great designs for pipe furniture lately, I figured I’d share something I did a while back.
I made a pot rack using some 3/4″ galvanized pipe, some fittings, and some hand made “S” hooks. After polishing the pipe, hitting it with a light coat of wax, and assembling it, the rack attached to the wall pretty easily with some wall anchors. The “S” hooks were the only real effort.
I bent some stiff wire around a broom handle and cut off the excess with a hack saw. I know it seems ridiculous to make your own “S” hooks (come on you can buy them at any hardware store), but it gives it that extra something. Different lengths and shapes add a little more interest. Off the shelf hooks just don’t look right to me. I’m an “S” hook snob, there I said it.
Oak Spheres for Sale
Tuesday, November 11th, 2008Two oak spheres turned while wood was green and allowed to dry and crack naturally. One is 6 inches in diameter, the other is about 5. The oak tree fell naturally at my parent’s place in the Poconos. Finished with walnut oil and furniture wax.
They are now for sale.
This ever happen to you?
Friday, October 31st, 2008This ever happen to you: You think you have this really original idea, you put a lot of time into it, and just when you’re almost finished someone tells you they’ve seen it done before.
That’s what happened to me this Halloween.
I built an angler fish mask out of paper mache, but thenickboy beat me to it. And it’s done really well. I like the paint job on his a lot better than mine.
Oh, and what’s crappier than someone beating you to a good idea? Two people beating you to a good idea.
Happy Halloween everybody.

The Making of Dr. Robot Head
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008When Jason and I finally decided to enter the ELE contest, we had about a week to do it. So the project was going to be a quick one and on the cheap. It turns out, I had just about everything I needed to make 3 robot heads in my apartment.
I put some time into two of the heads, the third one was basically just a white board, spray painted silver (not my best work).
The body was a wooden frame bolted to the back of an office chair. I sat backwards on the chair to operate the heads.
We even put a little site together for the good doctor.
Oak Lamp
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008Finished up a new lamp. An oak tree fell naturally at parent’s place in the Poconos. I took one of the logs and turned a small base.
I finished it with stain and tung oil. It was my first time using tung oil, I really liked the results. Lamp hardware is from Grand Brass.
