wind-O-farm

One of my latest project wind-O-farm is a 3D printed sculpture based on the data from Pennsylvania wind farms.

Taking data from all of the wind farms in the state of Pennsylvania, we have 3D printed a kinetic window screen sculpture.
The ‘wind-O-farm’ is comprised of a series of turbines, each representing its respective wind-farm. Turbine size, number of blades, location, and even efficiency is be determined by the data. The look of each turbine is reminiscent of farmhouse windmills, which can still be found across the state of Pennsylvania.

It was my first experience with 3D printing, I really enjoyed it.

I worked on this project with Filipa Tomaz, I think it turned out great.

LES Film Festival

Great news, a stop motion short I worked on, The Myth of Pyramis, will be screened at this year’s LES Film Festival March 10th at Grand Opening (139 Norfolk Street). We’re part of the Animation Showcase. Unfortunately, the show is already sold out.

I worked on the short with Phil Groman and Mick Hondlik. It’s our simplified take on the Myth of Sisyphus. The Pyramis character was created on the laser cutter out of cardboard and two push pin eyes. If you have access to a laser cutter you can make your own with this file.

Secret Passageway Switch Installation Video

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Finally got the installation video put together for the Secret Passageway Switch. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Matt Richardson, he basically shot, directed, and edited the whole thing. Thanks for all of the help Matt.

Full instructions can be found here.

Kinetic Sculpture 5

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Here is a quick video of my Physical Computing final. The kinetic sculpture is a series of 5 pendulums that are controlled by the viewer. When one waves there hand over a sensor, a pendulum is fired. It is kind of addictive.

This is a big one. Today swissmiss opened an online store. And I have the incredible honor of having one of my designs as one of the first items for sale. Mobile Homes in Swiss red are available now.

This is by far the most I’ve made of anything before. Images of the build process below:

Swissmiss was so kind to blog about my Secret Passageway Switch (and Mobile Homes). Now I’m worried that the servers will crash. Thanks Tina.

Also, I should mention that the switches are now for sale. Please note, the installation instructions have not be finalized yet. If you buy the product you will not have the full instructions for a few weeks. I got to get on that.

Cutting Boards

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Another oak tree fell on my parent’s house (seriously this makes three now), no major structural damage, just a broken window. But their misfortune is my gain, tons of fresh wood. Giant logs, probably 3 feet in diameter. They are huge.

So I figured I’d try out something new, quarter sawn oak, on a pair of cutting boards.

Cutting Boards

Very simple and straight forward project, but I’m really happy with how they turned out. The grain is beautiful and almost no splitting or checking, rare in my experience with green oak.

Cool Hunting mention

It is always a great surprise when you visit one of your favorite design blogs (one of my daily reads) and see your own work starring back at you. Cool Hunting, one of the first and one of the best, did a great round up of lighting they were digging at Design Week.

I’m honored to have the Bourbon Jar Lamps mentioned among these amazing designs:

- Esque and No.1 Son’s Afloat lamp

- Bocci’s 28 Series

- Matt Gagnon Prototype Lamps, I saw these guys while they were doing the live demo. Great lamps, nice guys.

- Lindsey Adelman Studio’s Burst, saw this one as well. Amazing work and Lindsey was very interesting and welcoming.

- Rich Brilliant Willing’s Delta IV

- UM Project’s L.U.M. Lamp

- Deger Cengiz’s Wooden LED Light
